    Summary

    A visit to the Department of Family Practice at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where education, research and teaching is taking place in all forms of complementary medicine, provides the background to a discussion of the current status of acupuncture in the USA.

    Health insurers commonly reimburse for complementary therapy, forty medical schools provide modules in complementary medicine, and federal funding is available for the study of non-orthodox treatments: ten national centres for disease prevention are currently researching and evaluating the non-orthodox therapies.
